"it's not all about the trains" :)

National Railway Museum, The Locomotion, Shildon, County Durham.

Opened September 2004.

Locomotion is the first national museum to be built in the North East. It combines the historic buildings and workshops of the Timothy Hackworth Museum with a new building housing sixty vehicles from the National Collection. (In Memory of founder Timothy Hackworth, who's childhood home still exists as part of the exhibitions)

Locomotion is on the site where the first passenger train started its journey in 1825 and where the first railway town, Shildon, grew up.

Shildon was selected by the National Railway Museum as a site to house the reserve collection of railway vehicles and establish a National Rail Collections Centre. This ensures that historically important railway vehicles are held in secure and weather proof premises and moreover are accessible to the public for the first time.
